The La Gâche bridge at La Chaize Giraud is in the Napoleonic style.
Built of schist and granite, it is situated at the end of the ancient estuary of the Jaunay: its role was vital at the time, as it was located on important communication routes.
On 08 May 1815, a violent battle took place between the Vendéens and the imperial troops, who were repulsed. The Royalists were under the command of Nicolas des Abbayes and were protecting a convoy of arms and munitions that had just landed at Saint Gilles.
