Ile d’Yeu is a small island, just 9.5 km long and 4.5 km wide and it is an unmissable place to visit while you’re staying in the area. It is just off the coast of the Vendée and can be explored either on a day trip or for a longer stay. Catch a boat with your family, friends or as a couple, for a complete change of scenery guaranteed!
Hop aboard the Compagnie Vendéenne or the Compagnie Yeu Continent on a crossing to Ile d’Yeu. The crossings run from Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie between April and October, and all year round from Fromentine.

As you explore the island, you’ll see all the different sides to Ile d’Yeu. The wild cliffs and coves and the contrasting greenery and magnificent sandy beaches. The wild coast on the south side of the island is very similar to the cliffs and rocks of Brittany. Whereas the north is a blend of dunes, beaches and maritime pine forests.
Visit île d’Yeu: by bike, on foot, on a minibus, on a little train or even a tuk-tuk!
Ile d’Yeu can easily be explored in one day. Do you prefer cycling or walking? There’s a solution for everyone. There are many different trails to choose from, all perfectly accessible, so you can explore the area at your own pace, along the coastal path and then discover the island’s inland treasures.
You might prefer to hop aboard the ‘petit train de l’île d’Yeu’ and go on a 2-hour tour with commentary. This tour is a great way to visit the island and to see all the main sights. The tour is also available on a minibus, with various routes to choose from.
Alternatively, you can explore Ile d’Yeu by venturing off the beaten track, in a Tuk-Tuk, for a different view of the island and its treasures, on an original and eco-friendly outing.
Not-to-be-missed on île d’Yeu
Don’t miss the island’s main sights, including the lively Port Joinville, where you’ll be arriving on the boat, the Vieux Château and cliffs, and the Port de la Meule, an authentic little fishing port, great for a leisurely stroll and a drink out in front of La Citadelle.

- On the day of departure, make sure you arrive at the jetty 30 minutes before the crossing.
- The crossing from Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie takes 1 hour.
- Free parking is available on Boulevard Georges Pompidou (10-15 min away on foot)
