Local scholars and historians have long believed that the Notre-Dame-de-Pitié chapel was built in 1610 by Marie de Beaucaire, Baroness of Rié, for the repose of the soul of her husband, Sébastien de Luxembourg, who died in 1569...
However, the latest restoration campaign, which began at the end of 2007 and was completed at the end of 2009, uncovered ancient remains (three-lobed windows, corner buttresses, etc.) which indicate that the building was in fact originally built in the Gothic style. The chapel therefore dates from the 14th or 15th century.
However, a number of points still need to be clarified, including the exact layout of the original monument and a more precise dating. In the future, excavations may enable us to shed more light on this chapel.
