14 Forest in Olonne, history, fauna and flora

The existence of the classified forest of Olonne is recent. During the reign of Louis XV, some individuals plant seedlings of maritime pines on the dunes. But it was the State, by the Ponts-et-Chaussées, which, from 1836, was busy installing a forest environment near the coast. The objective is to stabilize the dune cord sufficiently to make it a natural barrier against the ocean, protecting neighboring dwellings.
The wooded dune contains the forest itself and extends over nearly 1200 hectares (2 km wide by 9 km long). The state is the almost exclusive owner. Since 1966 he delegates the management to the National Office of Forests which defends the principle of inconstructibility.

Maritime pine is the dominant species alongside holm oaks, black locust trees, maples, ash trees and elms.
The undergrowth consists mainly of rosebushes, seals of Solomon, orchids ...
There are also many species of mushrooms such as boletus, morels, but also phalloids and citrines.
Among the most remarkable animal species, one can have the chance to see deer, wild boars, foxes, red partridges, pigeons, turtledoves.

Numerous picnic areas.
A bike path 'Vendée Vélo' connects Brem sur Mer to the Sables d'Olonne (17km).
