This stele commemorates the fall of the Marquis de la Rochejaquelein, leader of the Vendée royalist uprising.
The island of Rié bears the memory of two major battles in the Wars of Religion and the Wars of the Vendée. King Louis XIII founded his military glory here in 1622, and the Vendée generalissimo Louis de La Rochejaquelein came under fire from the Bonapartists in 1815.
